5 Statement of Purpose Mistakes That Sink Strong Applications

Admissions and scholarship committees read hundreds of statements. The ones that stand out are specific — not the ones that sound the most impressive.
1. Starting with a generic quote or cliché
"Since I was a child, I have always been passionate about..." is one of the most common opening lines committees see — and it rarely helps.
2. Listing achievements instead of connecting them
A strong SOP explains why each experience led logically to your next goal, not just what you did.
3. Ignoring the "why this programme, specifically" question
Naming specific courses, professors, or research areas signals genuine, researched interest rather than a generic application.
4. Being vague about future plans
Committees want to see a credible plan for how this specific degree moves you toward a specific goal.
5. Skipping the professional review
A second, expert set of eyes consistently catches structural and clarity issues the writer is too close to see.
